today i'm thankful for door locks. and neighbors.
last night i got an email from a neighbor, sent to a bunch of families. turns out earlier in the week, there were two people in the neighborhood trying to get into houses in the middle of the day. they left cleaning business cards in peoples doorways, but before they left, they checked the door handles to see if they could get in.
rewind to monday, lunchtime. i'm sitting with the girls at the table, eating and watching sesame videos. i hear someone at the door and think it's zane home from work really early. i get up to check and see the screen door close and see someone already down our steps and past our driveway. i remember thinking it was weird that they were already so far away from our door, but didn't give it much more thought.
now, back to reality. i get this email and my stomach drops and i'm shaking and think "what if the door had been unlocked and someone walked right into the house while we were here??" or "what if we were out and came home to someone in our house?" the rest of last night is a blur of me thinking irrational thoughts, zane calling the number on the business card (and talking to someone!), calling the police, talking to an office that came to our house (the woman that sent the email also filed a report), and making a plan to ensure that i/we feel as comfortable as possible here.
is it the weekend yet? :)

yikes! I don't like that! Did anyone get broken into? Isn't Belmont supposed to be a "good" area?
